So, March is now over, the first full month of this blog.
I like the idea of transparency on blogs, a lot of seriously successful bloggers like to publish their earnings, reader numbers and so on, so I thought I’d do the same. Not that my stats are particularly amazing right now, but it’s a start.
Way back in this post, I put together a few goals for March. Let’s see how we did.
Increase total blog posts to 25
So, no. I didn’t make that one. To save you all from having to go back and count, I managed to get to 17 posts. Eight short of target.
But you know what? I don’t even care. Frankly it was kind of a dumb goal anyway.
All that really happened was I sat down every evening and crapped out a few hundred words of whatever I could come up with at the time. There are some good-ish posts in there but nothing particularly amazing. So after a couple of weeks, I sort of abandoned the idea.
The idea of developing my writing style and finding a voice is still a good one and the best way to do so is to keep writing. Many writers and bloggers advocate writing every day, or at least 5 times a week. I’m certainly going to try doing that, but for now I’m going to move that sort of daily posting to medium.com, where I can work on
- building an audience,
- Getting better feedback
I’m not getting much in the way of traffic here, which I’m actually OK with considering I haven’t really tried. But writing on Medium means I can get in front of an audience of sorts, and more importantly the readers there seem very good at giving honest and constructive feedback.
Increase Twitter followers to 50
As I predicted, that was quite an easy target in the end. I have to admit I haven’t really worked as hard as I could have on this – in fact I haven’t really posted much of anything for a week now – but I’ve managed to get to 63 followers:
As I wrote about on my get more twitter followers post, I did play around and cheat a little by playing around with twiends.com which bagged me a few easy followers. I think over the course of the last couple of weeks though, most of those have unfollowed me again.
No big deal, I’m more interested in actually getting some engagement rather than getting a huge number of followers that don’t ever do anything.
So I’m reasonably content that most of the 63 followers I have have come to me organically. We’ll call that a win!
Do three interesting things
I’m on the fence as to whether I failed this or not.
I did actually go up a mountain, but it was a family thing which meant we (rather lamely) took the train up there rather than climbing it. We didn’t even go all the way to the summit, due to snow.
We did end up going through some lovely, if snowy, scenery on the way home though.
Other than that, I didn’t really get up to much that was interesting.
I did have a quick dabble with geocaching, and hunted down a couple of caches local to me.
I thought this would actually be a little interesting, but in the end it was frankly a little underwhelming. I went to the places, poked around for a minute, found the caches and then… well, that was it really. I can sort of see the fascination, but I think it’s not really going to be for me.
So, maybe a couple of interesting-ish things? Not really much to get excited over.
There’s been a lot of interesting stuff going through my head. Some of it (such as the 7 day business challenge) I’ve talked about on here but a lot of it has just been bouncing around either in my head or on paper. I’ve got ideas and plans for the future which I certainly didn’t have at the beginning of the month. All that remains now is to flesh them out a bit and put them into action!
So let’s talk stats
£96 – Bookkeeping Business
Just 83 page views. Oh dear. And while I did turn off any views from myself, I suspect a lot of those views were from bots.
Still, apart from a little bit of dabbling with twitter I’ve done literally nothing to bring in any traffic so these results aren’t at all surprising. I’ve just been working on content for the moment. I plan for that to change in April though, so watch this space!
A fairly mixed start to the blog; one target completely abandoned, one target beaten and one sort-of maybe if-you-squint-a-little achieved. But what I’ve got now for this blog (which I didn’t have before) is a bit of focus, a little bit of direction for this site. For April, I need to work on getting this place ready for some actual visitors!
